Building Real World Asset Infrastructure — RedBelly’s Approach

April 15, 2025

HyperNest Podcast is a monthly series where we meet Web3 founders, industry leaders, and blockchain experts to discuss various topics in the web3 space.

In the rapidly evolving world of DeFi, real-world asset tokenization is emerging as the next frontier of innovation. From unlocking access to previously illiquid markets to enabling compliant and secure on-chain financial products, the potential is massive—and transformative. Yet, despite the excitement, most of the world’s $ 800 trillion+ in traditional assets remains untouched by blockchain infrastructure. Enter Red Belly, a blockchain ecosystem purpose-built to bring real-world asset tokenization to life through scalable technology, regulatory alignment, and composable DeFi primitives.

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Jack Bronson, Head of Partnerships and Ecosystem at Red Belly, to dive deep into their journey, technology, and vision for RWA. His TradFi expertise, combined with a strong focus on real-world use cases, provides a compelling look at how Red Belly is positioning itself at the forefront of tokenizing tangible assets.

Real World Asset Tokenization Requires Purpose-Built Infrastructure

Most blockchains today, especially general-purpose L1s, aren’t equipped to handle the complexity, regulation, or throughput demands of institutional assets. Red Belly began its journey as a DBFT (Democratic Byzantine Fault Tolerance) consensus algorithm out of the University of Sydney in partnership with Australia’s CSIRO (the same research institution that invented Wi-Fi). The project evolved to become a full-fledged EVM-compatible L1 focused exclusively on real world asset tokenization.

🡒 Why It Matters:

By targeting RWA from the start, Red Belly addresses the specific technical and compliance challenges that builders face when tokenizing complex assets like private equity, debt instruments, or real estate. This includes instant finality (no forking), 53,000+ TPS on the EVM layer, and scalable validator consensus—all critical for real-time, high-volume trading environments.

Moving Beyond TVL: Redefining Success Metrics in Real World Asset Tokenization

While DeFi often prioritizes Total Value Locked (TVL) as an ecosystem metric, Jack points out that for real world asset tokenization, TVL can be misleading. Not all assets locked in smart contracts are live, compliant, or producing yield. Instead, Red Belly encourages the market to evaluate RWAs based on new metrics, such as asset performance, real yield generation, composability, and investor accessibility.

🡒 Takeaway:

Founders building in RWA should design protocols and metrics that emphasize asset utility, yield sustainability, and transparency—not just on-chain volume. This mindset shift is key for long-term institutional adoption.

Compliance As a Superpower in Real World Asset Tokenization

Red Belly doesn’t shy away from regulation—in fact, it leans into it. With KYC/AML protocols enforced at the network level and integration with identity verifiers like Sumsub, Red Belly is developing a system where wallets carry verifiable credentials across dApps, jurisdictions, and use cases. Their upcoming launch introduces ZK-powered verifiable credentials that—with one click—can prove a user’s investor status (e.g., accredited, retail, licensed professional) without revealing personal data.

🡒 Why Founders Should Care:

This unlocks seamless user onboarding while remaining compliant with regional regulations like Singapore’s MAS, Switzerland’s DLTA, or the EU’s MiCA. It also solves one of the biggest UX problems in decentralized RWA: repetitive KYC checks across platforms.

Tokenized Private Equity? Yes, It’s Happening

One of Red Belly’s most exciting initiatives is a partnership with Liquidize, a platform tokenizing private equities from tech companies in Australia. The opportunity? Let engineers, founders, and early employees of startups sell vested shares without waiting for an IPO or acquisition. For investors, this grants access to high-growth companies like a private SpaceX before public market entry.

🡒 What This Means:

Tokenizing private equity solves a two-sided liquidity issue—unlocking capital for insiders and offering retail access to previously gated markets. Builders inspired to tokenize equity assets should focus on regulatory plumbing, fractionalization, and secondary market mechanisms—exactly what Red Belly supports.

Unprecedented Speed, Finality & Scalability

The underlying technology powering Red Belly’s network is more than just fast—it’s purpose-built. Unlike proof-of-work or standard proof-of-stake chains where nodes compete, Red Belly validators co-create “superblocks,” sharing computation to increase speed and security. In lab conditions, the network demonstrated over 660,000 transactions per second (TPS)—exceeding NASDAQ volume at peak load.

🡒 Relevance for DeFi Builders:

If you’re building asset management tools, lending protocols, or even AI trading systems that demand sub-second settlement and uninterrupted uptime, Red Belly’s infrastructure offers a considerable edge

Vertical Agnostic, But Strategic About Real World Asset Tokenization

From tokenized Treasury Bills to rent-roll financing and manufacturing receivables, Red Belly remains asset-class agnostic. Yet, they see exceptional early traction in private credit and factor financing, where blockchain immediately reduces borrowing costs, streamlines underwriting, and boosts transparency.

🡒 Future Trend:

The biggest RWA growth area isn’t in tokenizing stocks—it’s in digitizing traditionally opaque instruments like trade finance, credit lines, and exotic cash flows. Founders: focus on new asset classes, not legacy replication.

Composability, Lending, and Liquidity—What Builders Should Create Next

Red Belly’s roadmap emphasizes onboarding DeFi applications focused on liquidity, accessibility, and composability of on-chain RWAs. These include lending markets for tokenized debt, structured note builders, and AI-driven yield optimizers. Builders are encouraged to see assets like tokenized equities or commodities as base-layer primitives, from which new financial products can emerge.

🡒 Call to Action for Founders:

Focus on unlocking utility. Whether it’s lending against gold, combining RMBS with vault protocols, or offering fractional diversification products, the opportunity is to reshape how global users build wealth.

Global Regulation Remains a Challenge—But Interoperability Can Bridge the Gap

With no universal regulatory framework in place, Red Belly acknowledges that interoperability across jurisdictions is essential. Whether it’s Europe’s MiCA or the U.S. SEC’s rules, being able to operate securely within localized compliance zones is vital. Their KYC-on-chain infrastructure paves the way for smoother cross-border participation.

🡒 For Cross-Border Builders:

Don’t wait for universal regulation. Build for modular compliance today, but develop tools that adapt as jurisdictions open up.

The Growth Curve: What Comes Next for RWAs?

In Jack’s words, we’re still in the “2016 moment” for RWA. The next year will focus on migrating traditional assets on-chain. Afterward, broader retail access will follow—with innovations like on-chain 401Ks, synthetic indexes, and highly liquid money markets. Builders who help define this composable layer today are paving the way for a more democratized financial system.

🡒 Where You Fit:

Think beyond tokenization. Every RWA protocol needs distribution channels, custodial integrations, price feeds, identity layers, and investor UX. There’s room for every kind of dApp.
