Canton: Bridging Privacy, Interop, and Finance in Blockchain
February 11, 2026
Hypernest Podcast is a monthly series where we meet Web3 founders, industry leaders, and blockchain experts to discuss various topics in the web3 space.
In the rapidly evolving world of blockchain technology, few projects are making as significant an impact as Canton. Recently featured on the Hyperness Podcast, Executive Director Melvis of the Canton Foundation shared insights into how this innovative network is revolutionizing institutional finance. This article dives into the conversation, highlighting Melvis’s background, key takeaways on Canton’s unique architecture, and its potential to reshape the financial landscape.
Who Is Melvis? A TradFi Veteran Turned Web3 Pioneer
Melvis, the Executive Director of the Canton Foundation, brings a wealth of experience that perfectly positions him at the intersection of traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized technologies (Web3). His journey began in the high-stakes world of Wall Street, where he spent nearly a decade at powerhouse institutions like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan. There, he honed his skills in capital markets, risk management, macro trading, and electronic trading.
The “crypto bug” bit Melvis around 2015-2016 during his research on Greek government bonds amid Brexit uncertainties. Intrigued by Bitcoin’s role as a censorship-resistant store of value, he dove deep into blockchain and cryptocurrencies—trading by day and learning by night. This passion led him to OKX, one of the top global crypto exchanges, where he led the market maker program and strategic partnerships.
As the convergence of TradFi and crypto gained momentum, Melvis’s blended expertise made him the ideal leader for the Canton Foundation. “Building my experiences, merging the TradFi experience and the crypto experience that I’ve gained over the years became perfect to find an opportunity that bridges those two,” Melvis explained. Under his guidance, Canton is not just a layer-1 network but a “network of networks” designed for institutional-grade applications with configurable privacy and seamless interoperability.
Key Takeaways from the Canton Discussion
The podcast episode unpacked Canton’s core innovations, addressing long-standing challenges in blockchain adoption for institutions. Here are the standout points:
1. Privacy and Interoperability: The Core USPs of Canton
Canton stands out by solving the binary dilemma of public vs. private blockchains. Unlike Ethereum or Solana, where everything is transparent on a single ledger, Canton allows configurable privacy at the sub-transaction level. This means institutions can control who sees what, without sacrificing composability.
Melvis drew a compelling analogy to the internet: “On the Internet, you’re able to go to a private website like your bank account… and on the Internet, you can go to a public website like Wikipedia.” Canton mirrors this by enabling multiple subnets (networks) with varying privacy controls, all interconnected via a “global synchronizer” for atomic settlements.
This architecture eliminates issues like Miner Extractable Value (MEV), as there’s no public mempool for front-running. “Because of the private nature of the architecture, you cannot really have MEV occur in terms of activities around trading,” Melvis noted. For TradFi players, this aligns with regulations against front-running, making Canton a compliant bridge to distributed ledger technology.
2. Real-World Partnerships and Massive Volumes
Canton isn’t theoretical—it’s already handling enormous institutional volumes. A highlight is the partnership with Broadridge, which facilitates repo transactions (repurchase agreements for short-term lending). Broadridge alone generates $200-300 billion in daily volume on Canton, part of a $10 trillion daily repo market.
Melvis provided context: “A repo is a lending agreement… typically used for short-term financing between some of the largest financial institutions.” By using Canton, these trades achieve T+0 settlement (same-day or intraday), a massive leap from traditional T+3, unlocking capital and operational efficiencies.
Another milestone is the collaboration with DTCC (Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation), the world’s largest central securities depository with over $100 trillion in assets. In 2025, they conducted live trades tokenizing U.S. Treasuries against stablecoins like USDC, involving heavyweights like Bank of America, Citadel, and Societe Generale. “They all were able to have the confidence that Canton works and can facilitate what their current business needs were,” Melvis shared.
Looking ahead to 2026, expect expansions into equities, ETFs, corporate bonds, and more, plus integrations with stablecoins (e.g., Circle), money market funds (e.g., Franklin Templeton’s Benji), and collateral mobility with Nasdaq.
3. Tokenization, DeFi, and Developer Opportunities
Canton supports true native tokenization, embedding rights, obligations, and claims directly on-chain using the Daml smart contract language (based on Haskell). This goes beyond IOUs, ensuring holders have real ownership—even in bankruptcy scenarios.
On the DeFi side, Melvis is excited about privacy-enhanced primitives like dark pool DEXes, prediction markets, and vaults. The network’s tokenomics align incentives: 50% of mineable Canton Coins reward applications based on utility, with fees burned and new coins minted. “If I come in, I launch an application… I should be rewarded that amount,” he emphasized.
For developers, Canton Polyglot is in the works to ease onboarding, alongside hackathons, a development fund, and resources. With over 80 apps launching in Q1 2026 and a membership foundation including Goldman Sachs and HSBC, the ecosystem is primed for growth.
4. Comparisons to Competitors: Why Canton Excels
Melvis contrasted Canton with Corda (permissioned, siloed) and Ethereum (transparent, bridge-dependent). Canton’s edge? Native interoperability without bridges, auditable privacy (vs. ZK’s black-box anonymity), and scalability. “Interoperability plus the privacy-preserving solutions all in one,” he summed up.
As for volumes, Canton already manages around $6 trillion in assets across partners, dwarfing crypto’s $3.5 trillion market cap. “We sometimes think too micro in terms of what’s happening immediately within the ecosystems and crypto, but not thinking about the broader network of finance,” Melvis observed.
Wrapping Up: Why Canton Is the Future of Finance
Canton is redefining how TradFi embraces distributed ledger technology, blending privacy, interoperability, and real-world utility. As Melvis aptly put it, “Canton is really where finance flows because we have TradFi, we have DeFi, but within Canton, it’s all Fi. Everything finance happens on Canton.”
For builders eyeing the next big opportunity, Melvis invites exploration: “If you want to come to a new and vibrant ecosystem to build new primitives… you should definitely take a look at Canton.”
As blockchain adoption accelerates, Canton’s institutional focus could unlock trillions in value. Whether you’re in Web3 or TradFi, this network of networks is one to watch in 2026 and beyond.
