Crypto Revolution Breaking Financial Barriers With BlockchainTechnology

The crypto revolution is reshaping the financial world, addressing systemic inequalities, and creating opportunities for financial sovereignty. For decades, the global financial system has failed to address the deep inequalities and structural biases that prevent billions of people from accessing fair and equitable opportunities. Instead, this system continues to perpetuate forms of oppression, ensuring that the wealthy grow wealthier while the poor remain marginalized. From discriminatory lending practices and currency restrictions to unequal access to financial markets, traditional finance has created barriers that prevent true financial sovereignty for most of the world’s population.

The Crypto Revolution: Fighting Discrimination in Financial Systems

The crypto revolution challenges long-standing discriminatory practices in finance. Historically, Black Americans were denied access to mortgages and fair credit, and even today, these discriminatory practices persist. A 2019 report by the Urban Institute highlights that Black homeownership rates remain at just 42%, compared to 72% for white households—the largest gap in over 50 years. Even when controlling for factors like income and credit score, Black applicants are still twice as likely to be denied loans compared to their white counterparts (Community Commons & Urban Institute). These disparities are rooted in systemic issues like redlining and predatory lending practices, which continue to deepen wealth inequality.

In countries like Venezuela and Argentina, government-imposed currency restrictions limit the ability of everyday citizens to protect their wealth. The poor are unable to access stable currencies, like the U.S. dollar, while the wealthy often use offshore accounts and foreign investments to avoid the crushing effects of inflation. This isn’t just economic control—it’s financial domination. Studies have shown that in Venezuela, the wealthy are able to shield their assets while the poor watch their savings evaporate .  The wealthiest 10% in Venezuela now earn 70 times more than the poorest 10%, creating a massive wealth gap. The poorest Venezuelans are forced to rely on informal work and face extreme food insecurity and lack of access to essential goods, while the elites continue to access luxury services and imported goods, often bypassing the state’s economic controls. In Argentina, for instance, the government places a 30-35% tax on U.S. dollar purchases, making it almost impossible for the average person to save in a stable currency (Source). In Nigeria, due to dollar shortages, strict foreign exchange controls make it difficult for citizens to exchange the Naira for foreign currencies, locking them into a devaluing local currency. These restrictions disproportionately impact the poor and the lower and  middle class, leaving them without options to protect their wealth, while the wealthy find ways to bypass the system.(Source)

How the Crypto Revolution Reduces High Remittance Fees

Migrant workers who send money home to support their families are often forced to pay high remittance fees, disproportionately affecting the poorest and most vulnerable. According to the World Bank, the global average remittance fee is around 6-7%, and in sub-Saharan Africa, it’s even higher at 8-9%. Some corridors have fees as high as 10-12%, meaning that for every $100 sent, only $88 reaches the recipient.

For workers sending small amounts of money to their families, this can be devastating. It’s an exploitation of those who can least afford it. Companies like Western Union and MoneyGram have long dominated this space, profiting at the expense of some of the world’s poorest people. For individuals sending small amounts of money, remittance fees from companies like Western Union and MoneyGram can indeed be devastating. Western Union’s international transfer fees can vary greatly, depending on the payment method and destination. For example, sending $500 from the U.S. to Mexico can be free when funded through an online bank transfer, but it can cost up to $64.49 when using a credit card to send cash to countries like China. Similarly, MoneyGram’s fees can range from $12.50 for a $200 cash transfer to significantly higher amounts for international transfers, particularly when credit cards are used (Source).

However, blockchain and DeFi offer a solution. Using stablecoins like USDT e.g. on the TRON and CELO  network, individuals can send money across borders with transaction fees amounting to just pennies. This is already happening in places like Africa, where stablecoins have become a preferred method for remittances due to their low cost and high speed. The adoption of blockchain technology and stablecoin is pervasive in economies where there is strong inflation and a lack of accessible financial services. (Source)

The Role of Banks vs. Blockchain in the Crypto Revolution

Banks profit from the fractional reserve system by lending out far more than they hold in deposits, while providing minimal returns to the very people whose money is being used. The average savings account in the U.S. offers an interest rate of around 0.30%, while inflation hovers around 2.5-4%, eroding the purchasing power of those savings.

In contrast, banks lend out these deposits at much higher interest rates, earning significant returns. When banks fail, depositors are only insured up to a certain amount (e.g.,$150,000 often in Europe and  $250,000 in the U.S.), while larger institutions are bailed out by governments. The result? Ordinary people take on the risk while receiving virtually none of the rewards.

DeFi, on the other hand, allows individuals to become liquidity providers or lenders themselves, earning interest and fees directly from their assets. Platforms like Uniswap and Aave empower users to take control of their money, with much higher returns compared to traditional banks. The historical annual percentage yields (APYs) for stablecoins like USDC, USDT, and DAI on Aave fluctuate based on market conditions and supply-demand dynamics. However, here is a general outline of past yields:

– USDC: Historically, the APY for USDC on Aave has ranged from 1% to 8%, with periods of higher volatility sometimes pushing it closer to 10% during bull markets.

– USDT: The APY for USDT on Aave has typically ranged between 2% to 10%, with higher yields observed when market conditions favor borrowing stablecoins.

– DAI: For DAI, the APY has historically varied from 1.5% to 10%, with occasional spikes during times of high demand for decentralized stablecoin.

Decentralized Solutions to Financial Suppression

Banks and financial institutions have often demonstrated their capacity to limit individual freedoms by freezing or restricting access to funds for those deemed contrarian to the established political or social order. This power has been used as a tool of control, effectively silencing dissent and reducing free speech. A few prominent examples highlight this trend:

– Canada’s Freedom Convoy (2022): During protests against COVID-19 mandates, the Canadian government invoked the Emergencies Act, which led to the freezing of over 76 bank accounts associated with protestors, totaling about CA$3.2 million. This was a clear demonstration of the financial system’s ability to stifle political dissent by cutting off participants’ access to financial resources(Wikipedia).

– Hong Kong Pro-Democracy Movement (2020): Pro-democracy activist Ted Hui and his family experienced account freezes by HSBC and other banks after Hui fled Hong Kong. Although authorities claimed the freeze was due to investigations under the national security law, it was widely seen as politically motivated, illustrating how banks can be used to suppress political opposition (South China Morning Post & Business & Human Rights Resource Centre).

– WikiLeaks Financial Blockade (2010): In response to WikiLeaks’ release of classified U.S. diplomatic cables, major financial institutions such as Visa, MasterCard, and Bank of America stopped processing donations to the organization. This financial blockade crippled WikiLeaks’ operations, despite the absence of formal charges against them at the time. It highlighted how financial systems can be used as extrajudicial tools of suppression, cutting off funding for those challenging powerful entities(Source.

Blockchain technology, in contrast, provides a decentralized and censorship-resistant solution to these problems. By allowing individuals to self-custody their assets and conduct transactions without intermediaries, blockchain mitigates the risk of financial suppression. Although the user experience with blockchain may still be less intuitive, its potential for ensuring financial freedom is clear—users retain control over their assets without fear of arbitrary freezes or restrictions. In this way, blockchain offers a path to greater financial sovereignty and freedom.

Transforming Finance: The Blockchain-led Financial Revolution

At the heart of the crypto revolution is the restructuring of financial systems. It provides decentralized financial sovereignty, allowing individuals to bypass government-imposed restrictions and maintain control over their wealth. DeFi enables permissionless access to financial tools, including loans and credit, without the need for intermediaries like banks.

While DeFi’s credit markets are still evolving, platforms like Aave and Compound are already offering ways for users to borrow assets based on their digital credentials, without the bias of traditional credit scores. Smart contracts are race, nationality, or wealth agnostic —they only assess whether you meet the collateral requirements. These contracts operate purely on objective terms: the collateral a user provides. Whether a user is in the U.S. or Nigeria, whether they are wealthy or poor, the only requirement to borrow assets on platforms like Aave or Compound is the value of the digital assets they offer as collateral. This makes DeFi far more inclusive, especially for the 1.7 billion unbanked people globally.

HyperNest: Supporting a New Financial Future

Backed by a community of over 100 industry leaders from top Web3 institutions, we actively support startups from around the world. Our mission is to provide these startups with the resources, investment, and mentorship they need to build bold, innovative solutions that can reshape the financial landscape.

Our portfolio reflects this commitment to transforming finance at its core. For instance, Lynex, the leading decentralized exchange (DEX) on the Linea blockchain, enables users to exchange currencies and access stablecoins. Similarly, UniPay is revolutionizing credit systems by offering a decentralized credit score linked to on-chain activity, paired with a global debit/credit card solution. This breaks down regional barriers, making credit accessible to everyone, regardless of location.

We’re also addressing inefficiencies in traditional financial infrastructure. St0x is working to bring stocks on-chain, eliminating the need for multiple middlemen like banks and credit card companies, which often impose unnecessary fees. This makes stock trading more affordable and accessible to a broader audience.

To simplify access to decentralized finance (DeFi), startups like QuantAMM and Lobster Protocol are developing smart vaults that provide users with intuitive financial tools, so they don’t need to be DeFi experts to participate and earn. These solutions are making DeFi more accessible, allowing people from all backgrounds to engage in these transformative systems.

Furthermore, Cashmere Labs is building infrastructure that facilitates seamless cross-chain transactions with low fees, ensuring the global financial system becomes more interconnected and efficient. These examples show how HyperNest is directly contributing to a future where financial services are decentralized, inclusive, and liberated from the traditional barriers that have historically excluded many from true financial freedom.

This is just a glimpse of the transformative work our startups are doing to reshape the financial landscape, making it more accessible to everyone—regardless of geography, wealth, or social status.
