How Intents are Rewriting the Rules of DeFi with CoW Swap

HyperNest Podcast is a monthly series where we meet Web3 founders, industry leaders, and blockchain experts to discuss various topics in the web3 space.

Web3 founders and DeFi innovators are no strangers to rapid experimentation, fragmented liquidity, and the ever-present specter of MEV. Navigating this terrain has become increasingly complex until now.

Enter intent-based DeFi: a groundbreaking paradigm that is transforming how decentralized trading, lending, and liquidity provisioning work at a fundamental level. In a recent episode of the HyperNest podcast, Anna George, Co-founder of Cow Swap, shared her deep expertise and journey from Gnosis to building a revolutionary ecosystem engineered to eliminate inefficiencies and protect users.

Speaker Spotlight: Meet Anna George

Anna George is one of the earliest architects of decentralized financial infrastructure. Starting her blockchain journey in 2017 with Gnosis, she was instrumental in designing advanced trading protocols aimed at solving the inefficiencies inherent in traditional DEX models. Her latest mission? Leading CowSwap, the protocol designed to unlock the full potential of intent-based DeFi through solver competitions, MEV protection, and capital-efficient batch auctions.

As CowSwap’s CEO Anna George explains: “A user signs an intent, what they want to sell, what to buy, and their slippage tolerance. Then, solvers compete to find the best route. It’s all about maximizing value while reducing gas costs and MEV exposure.”

Let’s unpack the key innovations that are making CowSwap the frontrunner in intent-first DEX architecture.

MEV Protection & Surplus Redistribution

One of the most disruptive elements of intent-based DeFi is its built-in protection against MEV exploitation. Traditional DEXs reveal user transactions in the mempool, giving bots the upper hand to execute sandwich or front-running attacks.

CowSwap avoids that vulnerability by abstracting execution through solvers. These entities are required to honor the price committed during competition, and they’re rewarded based on the delta between their quotes and the second-best offer.

“Users are no longer the ones paying for value extraction. Solvers shoulder the risk and competition governs fairness. It’s a second-price auction model where the winner gets to execute. Only if they deliver superior value,” Anna notes.

This fully aligns solver motives with user welfare, reshaping how market participants compete and collaborate.

Intent-Based DeFi Powers Gasless Transactions

Old-world blockchain UX included failed transactions, wallet juggling, and the need for ETH gas fees even when using stablecoins. In the Cow protocol, all that friction is abstracted away.

Gas fees are paid not in ETH, but in the token being sold or bought. If a transaction fails, the user pays nothing. The finality comes only when solvers lock in execution.

“It means users don’t even need to hold ETH in their account,” Anna explains. “It’s a radically improved onboarding experience, especially for DAO or institutional users.”

How Intent-Based DeFi Enables Peer-to-Peer Clearing

Another cornerstone of CowSwap’s design is p2p matching, otherwise known as the “coincidence of wants.” Cow stands for Coincidence of Wants, and it’s no coincidence that this concept is core to optimizing liquidity.

Rather than always routing trades through external AMMs, CowSwap solvers can match direct user intents internally, bypassing slippage and LP fees altogether. Up to 20% of volume now comes from such internal matches, saving users money while reducing reliance on third-party pools.

Solvers can even chain multiple user intents into “ring trades,” exponentially increasing execution efficiency. That’s not just smart contract logic. It’s real-world smart liquidity.

Fair Auctions and Surplus Distribution in Intent-Based DeFi

CowSwap’s evolution includes the recent rollout of “Fair Combinatorial Auctions,” a next-level batch mechanism that ensures surplus is distributed equitably across all included orders.

Previously, batch execution rewarded solvers who could optimize total surplus. Even when it led to unfair splits between disparate users. The new model enhances efficiency while also rewarding users based on their “standalone value.”

“Speed improved by up to 40%,” Anna reports, “and the system became more robust in handling large transaction batches.”

Solvers: The Unseen Heroes of Intent-Based DeFi

So, who are the solvers? They’re autonomous agents or institutional players competing to provide the best possible execution for users’ intents.

Initially developed in-house, solver participation is now fully decentralized. More than 30 independent teams, including top market makers and quant firms, are currently active. Their incentives? Weekly rewards based on execution quality, not user-extracted value. It’s a win-win.

And getting started is remarkably accessible. Every new solver receives guidance, open-source templates, and onboarding support from the Cow protocol team, lowering barriers to innovation.

Extending Intent-Based DeFi to DAO Treasuries and Cross-Chain Trading

DAOs conducting large treasury swaps, often plagued by long governance cycles and major slippage, are now turning to CowSwap for precise execution.

The protocol’s solver architecture allows orders to remain dormant until activated, then executed based on time-weighted average prices (TWAP) within specified slippage tolerances. It’s tailor-made for funds managing tens of millions in digital assets.

Even more exciting is the upcoming evolution of cross-chain intents. CowSwap is building new infrastructure to allow users to express an intent on one blockchain and have it fulfilled on another.

As Anna teases, “Imagine selling a Solana NFT, and someone on Ethereum can fulfill that intent. That’s where we’re going with seamless liquidity routing and universal solver execution across chains.”

Why Founders Should Build On CowSwap

For early-stage startups and protocol builders, integrating with CowSwap offers direct access to:

– A battle-tested intent-based architecture

– A high-performance solver ecosystem

– Out-of-the-box MEV protection and batch auctions

– APIs and support systems optimized for composability

“You don’t need to build your own solver competition. Tap into what we’ve already scaled,” Anna emphasizes. For DeFi and RWA projects looking to supercharge execution and minimize complexity, CowSwap is more than a DEX. It’s a crucial layer of infrastructure.

Final Thoughts

Intent-based DeFi isn’t just a UX improvement or a gas-saving trick. It represents the next stage in how liquidity, incentives, and smart contract design coalesce to form permissionless capital networks.

As CowSwap’s Anna George reminds us, “DeFi only wins if the user wins and that’s where intent unlocks the real magic.”

For founders building at the edge of DeFi infrastructure, the message is clear: design around intent, protect your users, and let solvers bring your protocol to life.
