Vaults: Just Multisigs or the New Operating System for Yield?

September 11, 2025

HyperNest Podcast is a monthly series where we meet Web3 founders, industry leaders, and blockchain experts to discuss various topics in the web3 space.

DeFi continues its rapid evolution, pushing boundaries in capital efficiency, user experience, and automation. At the heart of this transformation are yield vault, the operational engines powering everything from dynamic yield generation to automated liquidity orchestration. As protocols shift from traditional liquidity mining toward more scalable, modular, and permissionless frameworks, yield vaults are no longer “just glorified multisigs”, they’re becoming the de facto operating system of DeFi yields.

In a recent episode of the HyperNest podcast, we sat down with Roman Prokhorenko, Product Lead of Mellow Protocol, to unpack the architecture, strategies, risk layers, and future potential of vaults.

Meet the Speaker: Roman, Product Lead at Mellow Finance

Roman brings a unique product perspective forged through years in both Web2 and Web3. After leading growth and analytics roles at Rarible and Reclaim Protocol, Roman joined Mellow Finance in 2023 to spearhead the product’s evolution. Under his leadership, Mellow has rapidly transitioned from a liquid restaking token protocol to a trailblazer in permissionless, modular vault infrastructure with over $500M in total value locked.

His experience spans liquid restaking, zk protocols, and permissionless infrastructure, making him an authoritative voice on where Yield Vault Strategies are heading next.

Key Takeways from the conversation

1. The Rise of Modular Yield Vault Strategies

As Roman explains, the architecture of Mellow vaults is designed with two pillars: permissionlessness and modularity, a stark departure from centralized, multisig-dependent vault structures of the past.

Yield Vault Strategies are evolving into programmable operating systems for capital. Instead of depending on multisig controllers, Mellow enables vault “subvaults” with hardcoded strategies and pre-defined risk parameters. These vaults operate transparently, allowing liquidity providers to see exactly where their funds are going—whether it’s 25% to ETH restaking, 25% to lending platforms, and the remainder to protocols like Aave.

This architecture doesn’t just decentralize strategy execution. It opens new doors for programmable finance:

– Strategy scripting enables composable capital flows.

– Clear risk disclosures backed by on-chain logic.

– Abstracted interfaces for creators to deploy without dev overhead.

2. Yield Vault Strategies and Interoperability

Cross-chain capital efficiency is another axis where Yield Vault Strategies shine. Mellow leverages LayerZero’s OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) to make this seamless. A user can deposit WBTC on Lisk and have it used in a strategy on Ethereum Mainnet, without manual bridging.

In practice, this enables three layers of yield potential:

– Base strategy yield (e.g., lending returns).

– Incentives from interacting protocols (e.g., governance token rewards).

– Meta-rewards like Mellow Points or protocol loyalty programs.

This “yield lasagna” makes vaults capable of triple-dipping while maintaining transparency and risk segregation.

3. The Power (and Limitations) of Permissionless Composability

One of Mellow’s signature innovations is allowing virtually anyone to create vaults, mimicking the permissionless ethos of Uniswap and Compound.

However, with great power comes great risk. Malicious actors could use this permissionless openness to deploy exploitative strategies. To mitigate this, Mellow provides:

– Pre-audit templates for safe strategy scripting.

– Disclosure frameworks outlining the “rails” each capital set is operating on.

– Future integration with third-party risk oracles, like Credora, for objective credit scoring.

This balance between openness and accountability defines the next generation of Yield Vault Strategies.

4. Institutional Appetite for Yield Vault Strategies

Institutional capital is coming to DeFi, but it brings stringent expectations. Roman notes that many institutions are already engaging in exploratory conversations—but require infrastructure that supports:

– Custodianship and compliant on/off-ramps.

– Transparent reporting of vault strategy mechanics and risk.

– The ability to whitelist vault interactions by KYC-status or chain.

Asregulation advances and black-box strategies become unviable, Yield Vault Strategies that offer transparency, risk labeling, and verified curators will capture greater institutional inflows.

5. Beyond DeFi: RWA and AI-Optimized Yield Vault Strategies

So where do we go from here?

Roman sees three converging trends:

– The rise of Real World Assets (treasury bills, real estate, tokenized invoices) being wrapped into on-chain vault strategies.

– AI being used to help optimize capital allocation between vaults, informed by historical performance and real-time risk scoring.

– Middleware protocols like Copper or Sefu enabling hybrids between on-chain and off-chain yield plays, such as arbitrage between DEXs and CEXs.

While risky, these new categories hold promise for boosting yield consistency through bull and bear markets alike.

5. Why Builders Shouldn’t Reinvent the Vault

For founders building niche DeFi or RWA applications, the temptation might be to launch a proprietary vault system. Roman offers a strong counterpoint: don’t.

Instead, leverage open and composable Yield Vault Strategies like those offered by Mellow. Builders can bring their own strategy logic, plug into Mellow’s infrastructure, and even structure vaults for a validator set, off-chain arbitrage loop, or real estate income split.

The benefits:

– Faster go-to-market.

– Focus on distribution and UX instead of infrastructure.

– Access to capital sources already interfacing with Mellow.

Closing Thoughts

Yield Vault Strategies have come a long way from being perceived as “glorified multisigs.” Today, they’re powering modular, transparent, and programmable capital strategies across an increasingly interoperable DeFi landscape. From permissionless infrastructure to institutional-grade compliance, vaults like those from Mellow Finance are leading the charge.

Whether you’re a DeFi founder, a TradFi crossover team, or a real-world asset innovator, don’t sleep on the growing importance of vault architecture. It’s not just where your capital lives. It’s how your strategy wins.
